Indie Pop/R&B Singer-songwriter FIG Shares Introspective 8-Song Project, ‘FITS’

FIG, a Philippine-born, Singapore-raised Malaysian indie pop/R&B singer-songwriter now based in New York City, shares her sophomore release, ‘FITS’, an 8-track project that dives deep into the emotional arc of friendships and relationships, capturing both their beautiful beginnings and their sometimes inevitable endings. Through lush beats and soulful vocals, FIG takes listeners on a journey through connection and closure, confronting both the joys and hardships of love and companionship.

Central to the project is the idea of throwing “fits” internally, a metaphor for the inner turmoil and self-conversations we have as we wrestle with what’s best for us. “On this project, I explored the theme of engaging in extreme or unconventional actions as a way to reconnect with one’s true self,” FIG reveals. “I also examined the dynamics of forming and ending relationships, focusing on the mental frustrations involved and how these experiences contribute to self-discovery.

The new project includes production from frequent collaborators Julian Kaufman and Charlie Kilgore of the Indie R&B group MICHELLEFrankie Scoca (NewJeans, dhruv), Nick Catrambone and Maya Polsky, and a featured verse from rapper Yoshi T. on the vibrant lead single, “Opposite Day”, released last month. The project’s creative vision draws inspiration from the concept of large objects and the idea of scale, tying into the theme of engaging in extreme or consuming behaviours to reconnect with oneself.

Many of these songs emerged from conversations with peers, where we exchanged personal experiences and ideas,” FIG shares. “Previously, I was cautious about sharing ideas until they felt ‘right,’ but this time, I embraced the freedom of expressing all ideas, regardless of their quality. This approach helped me overcome overthinking and allowed for a more open creative process. Additionally, I ventured into writing about new emotions, such as love and loss, which I had previously avoided.

The project’s indie R&B focus track, “Boyfriend”, explores the unspoken tension in a one-sided friendship where the moody production and snappy lyrics reflect the overthinking and self-doubt when things are left unsaid. Embracing the journey of realising when it’s time to let go of a friendship that no longer serves you, “Boyfriend”  is the perfect breakup number for those reflecting on toxic relationships and embracing self-worth.

‘FITS’ also offers moments of self-reflection, with tracks like “Solo Dates” and “Let It Burn,” where FIG celebrates the art of enjoying one’s own company. In these songs, she discovers the power of independence and the growth that comes from learning on one’s own terms, inviting listeners to sit with her, offering a journey of vulnerability, growth, and self-discovery through interactions with others.
